Blogruary Day 12: The Pull-Out

Part of the MA Journalism course that I am doing involves together a pull-out supplement to go with the university newspaper.

As is the case with most things, we were given first instructions about this with four weeks until it was due out.

So a small team of editors, including myself, spent the week planning ideas for the pull-out and after much deliberation pooled together around 50 ideas into a neat and tidy Google Doc.

We were as pleased as punch with our efforts and the editor of the project proudly presented it today to our lecturer hoping for the go ahead. We had a theme of money with a serious tone unpinned by information boxes and some humorous articles and we believed we had it cracked.

One student who hadn't contributed to our discussions or e-mailed across any ideas brought her own suggestion to the class. She proposed a tongue-in-cheek article about the best ways to make money such as opening a tanning shop in Essex.

I didn't particularly find this that exciting but our lecturer lapped up the idea claiming this was the way we should run our pull-out. She instructed that it should be tongue-in-cheek and bordering on trashy for the supposedly intellectuality-challenged undergraduate students.

In one fail swoop, we were pretty much told that our ideas were rubbish and that we had to produce a pull-out in the style that our teacher wanted.

I thought MA degrees were supposed to treat you as adults and near-enough as professionals. Apparently that isn't the case.
